Make plans for this one night only Byzantine music concert performance by the Theotokos Orthodox Choir on Friday, October 12 at the UTEP Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall at 7pm. Visiting from Beirut, Lebanon, their U.S. tour represents a rare opportunity to experience the most ancient form of chant known to Christianity and one of the hidden treasures of the most ancient Christian Church.
“Our people are enthusiastic because many of their parents and grandparents have told them stories about the beauty of worship back in the old country,” said Fr. Joseph Hector Abouid, Pastor of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in El Paso. “As I told them this past Sunday after my sermon, ‘If I can’t take y’all to the old country, then I will bring the old country to you!’” “So much of the Church’s rich theology is expressed in the hymnography,” said Fr. James Shadid, Pastor of St.George in Houston, Texas, where the group will also perform.
Tickets are $12 each. Purchase tickets at ticketmaster.com or at the recital hall on the day of the event. The concert is made possible through the collaboration of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church of El Paso & the Middle-Eastern Music Ensemble Layali Al-Sham of UTEP.
St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church will also offer a Byzantine Music Workshop on Thursday, October 11 at UTEP at 3pm, Great Vespers at St. George on Saturday, October 13 at 5pm, and Orthros and Divine Liturgy presided by His Grace Bishop Basil on Sunday, October 14 at 9:15am.
