Sister Nancy Murray, OP, will perform her celebrated one-woman play, “Saint Catherine of Siena: A Woman For Our Times” at 4pm on September 10 at the Loretto Academy Little Theater located at 1300 Hardaway Drive.
Sister Nancy Murray, who has performed her play for audiences around the world, is the sister of actor Bill Murray. She entered the Adrian Dominicans in 1966 and earned a bachelor’s degree in pastoral studies from Loyola University in Chicago.
The proceeds from the performance will benefit Centro de Santa Catalina, a Juárez, Mexico-based non-profit organization whose mission is to aid impoverished women and children.
Centro de Santa Catalina is named after Saint Catherine of Siena who was a lay Dominican woman in 1366. As a young girl, she experienced visions that led her to helping the sick and poor of Siena. In 1939, she was declared the patron saint of Italy. In 1970, she was given the title of Doctor of the Church, a title that very few women hold.
A reception and silent auction will be held on the patio outside of the theater following Sister Nancy Murray’s performance. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased by calling the Centro de Santa Catalina office at (915) 227-5113. For further assistance, contact Gloria Yañez at (915) 474-2034 or Bea Chávez at (915) 329-8513.
Centro de Santa Catalina was founded in 1996 by Dominican Sisters Donna Kustusch and Eleanor Stech for the spiritual, educational, and economic empowerment of economically poor women and for the welfare of our families.
It’s located in Ciudad Juárez on a former municipal garbage dump. The first successful project was the establishment of a sewing cooperative in 1997, which produces a variety of textile products and accessories made from Mexican fabric that are sold mostly in the U.S. at conferences, bazaars, parishes, at the Centro de Santa Catalina shop inside the Loretto Academy El Convento, and online.
Sisters Donna and Eleanor, OP; Elizabeth (Libby) Pepe, OSF; Rose Ann Schlitt, OP; Rene Weeks, OP, Fran Hicks, OSF, and Maureen Gallagher, OP, have guided the mission of Centro de Santa Catalina over the years. Currently, Rosa Elida Villela Hernández serves as Director of Centro de Santa Catalina.
