Please join us in congratulating Bishop Mark Seitz for his recent El Pasoan of the Year nomination!
The El Paso Inc. recognized Bishop Mark for taking “his love of El Paso and concern for migrants from the streets to the highest levels, elevating border issues nationally with compassion and care for those on the margins.”
In 2022, Bishop Mark was named the chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration. The committee sets broad policies and direction for the Church’s work in the area of migration, oversees and provides guidance to USCCB Migration and Refugee Services offices that represent the bishops’ interests in policy formulation and communication, advocacy, education, refugee resettlement, and other specialized services to at-risk and vulnerable populations, such as victims of trafficking and unaccompanied minors.
Pope Francis has acknowledged Bishop Mark calling him a “great pastor” and told the Jesuit American Magazine, “He is a man who grasps all the contradictions of that place (US-Mexico Border) and carries them forward as a pastor,”
In a September 15, 2023 statement, released ahead of the celebration of National Migration Week by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Seitz said, “Through our belief in Jesus Christ, we are compelled to respond with charity toward those who must uproot their lives in search of refuge.”
The 2023 El Pasoan of the Year and Community Spirit Award honorees will be announced on December 31, 2023.
