St. John Paul II is the name of the new parish that is merging the Catholic communities of Santa Lucia and San Jose churches. San Jose was established as a mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1897. It was called San José de los Ranchos and legend has it that worship services date as far back as 1850. Santa Lucia was established as a mission of San Antonio de Padua Parish in 1971 and elevated to parish status in 1978. This fund helps support the life and programs of the parish.
In the spirit of Vatican II, the San Antonio de Padua Parish had the first parish assembly in the diocese. Over 300 parishioners participated to develop a five-year evangelization plan that included the building of a new church, a large community center, the establishment of ministries to serve the needs of the parish and neighborhood, the fostering of Hispanic religious-cultural traditions, new choirs, the formation of youth leaders, ministry for the divorced and separated, Matachines, Sunday fellowship meals, and youth ministries.
