Volunteers from around the El Paso community and across the state have come together to work on the first-ever project of its kind in the Segundo Barrio: Restore Sacred Heart Church. The Segundo Barrio National Historic District was established in 2021 and with the efforts of these volunteers, the Segundo Barrio can look forward to an architectural rebirth.
The mission of Restore Sacred Heart Church is to restore the iconic, Sacred Heart Church in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio, along with the adjoining former Sacred Heart School building, now the Pastoral Center, and the rectory building, which houses the Jesuit residence and church offices. The buildings of the Sacred Heart Church complex are between 92 and 129 years old and are in desperate need of restoration and infrastructural upgrades. The limited financial resources of the church, located three blocks from the Mexican-American border, have made the much-needed restoration impossible. The Restore Sacred Heart Church Fund is a vehicle for those who wish to contribute and help raise the $3 Million needed to restore the iconic church. The Catholic Foundation will oversee the distribution of funds intended to support the Restore Sacred Heart Church Project.
The restoration of Sacred Heart Church is a unique, significant, and impactful project for the Segundo Barrio National Historic District, the community at large, and the state of Texas. The Catholic Foundation invites you to be part of this historic event.
